Join us on Thursday, February 7th from 9 am to 11 am for Josselyn's CE Course: Psychotropic Medications: An Introduction for Non-Prescribers presented by Dr. Hossam Mahmoud.  

About the course: Designed for the non-prescriber, this engaging and informative course will enhance the attendees knowledge of psychotropic medications and their effects on persons living with mental illness. Dr. Mahmoud will also review the over-diagnosis and mis-diagnosis of bipolar and ADHD; what constitutes a disorder vs a "normal" response to stressors; and, the over-reliance on controlled substances in prescribing patterns.

Course objectives include:

  • An introduction to common psychiatric disorders
  • Common misdiagnoses and common diagnostic considerations
  • An overview of psychotropic medications as they pertain to these disorders
  • A description of the complexities and best practices for prescribing practices
  • An exploration of optimal collaborative approaches between prescribers and non-prescribers

Two CE units are available for social workers and counselors. 

About the Presenter: Dr. Hossam Mahmoud is a Board Certified psychiatrist. He is the medical director at Regroup. He earned his Medical Degree and Masters of Public Health at the American University of Beirut. He completed his residency training at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University in Chicago. Dr. Mahmoud believes in a thoughtful and methodical approach to the treatment of mental illness that aims at avoiding over-diagnosis and under-diagnosis and that aims at helping patients make the right decisions regarding their treatment. Dr. Mahmoud strongly believes in the role of healthcare professionals as advocates for the rights of patients to access to good-quality care. He has practiced medicine in English, French and Arabic. He is interested in LGBTQ mental health, refugee and immigrant mental health and the mental health of linguistic and cultural minorities.
